The nature beings or the elemental beings have been known to people since ancient times, many of us have become familiar with them and even today we still find many people who are convinced of their existence. What knowledge we have had about their activities has been only uncertain suppositions and guess work. These beings originate in the Animistic realm which is a special sphere of Creation concerned with bringing warmth and mobility into the material worlds since the latter lacks this warmth. Therefore, without the activity of the Animistic beings, the world of matter would be like a lifeless uninhabitable waste. In the formation of the world of matter of which the Ethereal and the Gross material worlds are part, the hands that shape the celestial bodies of which these worlds consists belong to these beings. All the elements for the formation of these celestial bodies are present but these elements have to be combined in different ways for these forms to appear and those who combine these elements are the elemental beings. Therefore, through their activities planets accrete, the stars are formed and so much else. The form of the Ethereal and Gross material worlds were given through the activities of these elemental beings. Thus we have a formed world, something which would not have been possible without these beings. All the planets, the stars and everything on them took on form through the activities of these elemental beings.
There are various kinds however, depending on what they concern themselves with. There are also great and small ones, depending on individual responsibilities. There are some that are concerned mainly with the formation of new planets and the maintenance of their orbits, while others are concerned with the formation of the weather, the movements of the oceans. There are some others that are more directly concerned with man on earth; for example those concerned with the formation of the forms of our thoughts and deeds. Others are concerned with our immediate environment such as those which concern themselves with the maintenance of our plants and crops, our rivers and streams and our soils. These have been variously recognised, and without their activities, life as we know it would not be a possibility. If they had failed in their duties like we human beings have continually failed, then our development would have been held back and there would have been no question of our being able to come here for our necessary maturing. They would have held us back like we now hold back true blossoming for the entire material Creation. We would still be spirit germs having the burning desire within to become self conscious but without the possibility of doing so because the world of matter would not have been prepared to receive us through the failure of the elemental beings to do their work. We today through our failure have held back many other creatures from becoming what they should become because this depends on the mediation of the human spirits. Just like we depend on the Animistic for our own blossoming, so do other creatures depend on human spirits for their blossoming and development.
What the animistic did not fail us we failed others, but in the process we harmed ourselves the most because through our activities we have held back true blossoming for ourselves. We are therefore the first to reap the consequences of our failures. It is really difficult for one to express in words how indeed dependent we are on the elemental beings. That would have to be left for each individual to experience for himself and gradually become convinced of. One picture is sufficient: we came with nothing into this earth, no means whatever for survival, yet we find everything ready-made and prepared, even the physical body was given to us only through the activities of these beings. In short, as human spirits we have nothing, everything we have has been given to us as a loan for the necessary maturing through the Grace and Will of God. top
The smaller elemental beings, just like everything else came into being only through the Grace and Will of God, Who have allowed them to come here and create a field of activity for themselves. This Will has also allowed us as human spirits to come here and form a field of activity for ourselves. The origin of the elemental beings have been described in great detail in the book "In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message”, it just suffices to say here that they become deposited on the several planes of matter to work in these planes according to their natures. Hence when they get to the earth, the different species which have been deposited concern themselves with the particular element for which they have been destined. Hence we have them specialising in the maintenance of the different elements of water, air, fire and earth. They originate from the ring of Animistic substantiality as the last precipitation thereof and are carried by animistic currents through the different planes of matter being deposited on each plane as these currents pass through. They therefore, also like the human spirits originate as germs. The particular plane on which they are retained is where they awaken and work. The groups of small elemental beings on earth are connected with higher ones in fine and medium gross matter and so on into the ethereal world, and so it goes on as if in a chain until this chain reaches the Animistic realm to the Lords of the Elements who in turn are connected even with more powerful groups in the Spiritual and Primordial Spiritual realms. Their activities therefore is controlled from above and the power of the whole flows through them in their work which as a result of this mirrors the perfection that is to be found in the Luminous Heights. top
Activities and Functions
If we human beings are to derive maximum benefit from our environments, it is clear that we must familiarise ourselves with those whose work it is to fashion this environment. If we are to understand Nature and to use what it has to offer for our benefit, then we must first learn from those who are custodians of it. If we are to understand the nature of fire and benefit from its applications, it is to the elemental beings which deal with it that we must turn and the same applies to the other elements
These beings possess the key to the exploitation of the forces of nature. We have to learn how to better our lives by the applications of these forces. We do not know the real purpose of the many elements of nature. If we did then the world would long since have been a different place. Our ignorance however, has not really made it possible to do anything useful with these forces. top
Higher Elemental Beings and the Lords of the Elements
The higher elemental beings include those who stand directly above the lower ones and as such control the activities of these. In the chain from above downwards, they stand next in line to those who are known to us directly on earth as the little elemental beings. They are mostly those which concern themselves with the upper lying realms of medium and fine gross matter, the ethereal realm and also the great elemental beings here on earth which concern themselves with the greater tasks such as the weather, the control of the climate and atmosphere; they also include the great elemental beings of the mountains such as the giants, the great ones of the oceans and so on. People in the olden times have been able to recognise several of these and their activities have to some extent being accurately described.
The Lords of the Elements are those which have been given different names by different peoples and their abode have also been identified, especially by the Greeks who call it Olympus and the Scandinavians who call it Valhalla. The Germanic peoples called the Lord of the Elements “Odin” or “Wotan”, the English called him “Woden”, while the Romans called him “Jupiter” and the Greeks “Zeus”. They all described the same elemental being who stands above the rest, but there are also others which stand side by side or below and which have been regarded as 'gods' and 'goddesses' and worshipped. They are associated with specific activities in Nature, for example we have “Thor” the 'god' of thunder, who is associated with weather changes. In Greek Mythology, the so called 'gods' and 'goddesses' have been divided according to function and the element they are associated with. Thus we have groups associated with fire, others with water, and so on. In Greek Mythology, the great ones including the 'Lords' are numbered as 21, but those who are regarded as Olympians (living on Olympus) are 12. top
The first and foremost is 'Zeus' who is regarded as ruler of the 'gods' and he is identical with 'Jupiter' of the Romans and 'Odin' or 'Wotan of the Scandinavian and Germanic peoples respectively. These higher elemental beings, just like the lower ones have both male and female forms. They all have human forms however not the monsters which have been described in relation to the demons. The 'gods' and 'goddesses' are ranked according to powers and authority. Thus we have (1.) 'Zeus', the chief of the 'gods', (2.) His wife Hera, supposed queen of heaven and the guardian of marriage. (3.) Hephaestus, 'god' of fire and metal workers (4.) Athena, 'goddess' of wisdom and war (5.) Apollo, 'god' of light and poetry and music (6.) Artemis, 'goddess' of wildlife and moon (7.) Ares, 'god' of war. (8.) Aphrodite, 'goddess' of love. (9.) Hestia, 'goddess' of hearth. (10.) Hermes, messenger of the 'gods' and ruler of science and invention. All these are said to be associated with the Air. Those associated with the sea include Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite who lead a group of less powerful 'gods' like the Nereids and the Tritons. Associated with the earth is Demeter, the 'goddess' of agriculture. Dionysus was supposed to be the 'god' of wine and vegetation. In Scandinavian Mythology we have other 'gods' like Heimdall, Njord, the fertility 'god', and Ull who were recognised before 'Odin' or 'Wotan'. Lesser 'gods' and 'goddesses were known such as Balder, Hermod, Tyr, Bragi, Idun, Nanna and Sif. They greater ones include Thor, the 'god' of thunder; Frey, 'god' of prosperity; Freya, the fertility 'goddess'; Frigg, 'goddess' of home who was the wife of Odin.
Scandinavian Mythology also elaborately describes the organisation of the home of the 'Lords' and higher elemental beings. Thus we have Asgard which is the abode of the 'gods'. Asgard was divided in to twelve realms with each realm having its own principal 'god'. The most important realm was Valhalla, which was the home of 'Odin' the chief of all the 'gods'. top
A Short Consideration of the Elements
Let us at this stage consider each one of the elements in order for us to gain an insight into how useful they are to us.
The element of air is maintained by special elemental beings called Sylphs. In addition to the air, which we breathe and as such surrounds us terrestrially, the entire Atmosphere has to be taken into consideration, since the latter also includes the air. The Sylphs themselves have female forms because of the delicacy of this element. In the upper atmosphere however, where for example the weather is formed and various other changes take place, the elemental beings are in both male and female forms. Air is an element which is indispensable to all kinds of life on earth. Plants, animals and human beings cannot live here without the existence of these element. The air is a mixture of gases of 21% is oxygen, 78% hydrogen, 0.9% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide. We also have varying amounts of water vapour and other trace quantities of hydrogen, ozone, helium, neon, methane and so on. Carbon dioxide from the air and water are used by plants through the process of photosynthesis in which plants produce sugars for themselves which are stored as their tissues and on which we all feed. The plants however, through this process, produce a very important by-product, oxygen, which all animals and also humans breath and without which life as we know it would not be possible. The atmosphere, which surrounds the earth, not only contains all these mixture of gases mentioned above but also contains a special layer of gas called the ozone layer which has recently been discovered to be very important to life on earth in its ability to protect us from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun which can be cancer causing. The atmosphere also protects us in many ways against the harmful effect of other kinds of rays such as the cosmic rays which would otherwise hit us here in unimpaired strength.
The atmosphere has generally been divided into layers and it would be useful for us to familiarise ourselves with these. The lowest zone is called the Troposphere which extends up to about 16 kilometres above sea level and this layer is where the weather is formed. The Stratosphere lies above this and extends up to about 50 kilometres. This layer is important because it contains the layer of ozone mentioned above. Then comes the Mesosphere which is characterised by marked decreases in temperatures as altitude increases and extends up to 80 kilometres above sea level. The next layer is called the Thermosphere because of the rapid rise in temperature which can reach 1200º C. It is also called the Ionosphere because electrons are generated as a result of ultraviolet rays from the sun ionising this layer. It extends up to 640 kilometres above sea level. The exosphere lies beyond this and extends for up to 9600 kilometres which is the outer limit of the atmosphere. The importance of the atmosphere can be appreciated when the balance is disturbed by for example the actions of man. For example, if the ozone layer present in the Stratosphere is destroyed as it is happening at present, because of the introduction of harmful industrial chemicals, ultraviolet rays from the sun which this layer is meant to absorb are able to penetrate to the earth thereby damaging skin and eyes leading to widespread skin and eye cancers. If the carbon dioxide, methane and the so-called 'chlorofluorocarbons' increase in concentration in the atmosphere, they retain the sun's infrared rays thereby causing a rise in the earth's surface temperature. This temperature rise which has been described as global warming may melt polar ice caps leading to catastrophic weather changes, flooding and so on. Air pollution by factories have been known to cause 'acid rains' destroying rivers and forests, crops and other vegetation. In the field of medicine, oxygen has been discovered to play a pivotal role in body defence. The white blood cells in the blood which are part of the body's natural defences against bacterial invaders go through a process called a respiratory burst, a rapid intake of oxygen which helps them to destroy microbes through a series of reactions in which products of oxygen called 'radicals' are released which are very toxic to these organisms. Do we deny there is still more to be discovered? Many people have discovered the importance and the invigorating effects of breathing exercises. Who can assert with certainty there is no more still to be discovered? We are at the very beginning of a very long road. Real success however, can only be achieved through close collaboration with those elemental beings associated with this very important element. top
The element earth would include the crust of the earth, the mantle and the core and the elemental beings who concern themselves with these. Also to be included are the various plant life forms that grow from the crust of the earth and the elemental beings which deal with these. The latter are called elves and they include the flower and tree elves. The entire surface of the earth and the various environments, hence the rocks, mountains, deserts, forests and so on must be included. Each of the landscapes of the different continents and in different countries has their own characteristics and each forms a part of the whole; each has what it has to give. Each has its own vegetation, which is not usually found elsewhere, and represents an adaptation to its particular environment. Each has its group of adapted animals and each type of soil has its own group of organisms in it. Each of these characteristics make them indispensable parts of the whole and which the human beings living in that particular soil should learn to exploit. Each soil produces exactly what the particular people need for its sustenance, its foods and medicines, clothing and even shelter and mineral resources. Each soil or land gives man what he needs for his time on earth, each soil has abundant untapped resources, a potential to blossom forth with riches and perfection, but this can only be done with the help of human beings with our special talents working in conjunction with the elemental beings which joint activity will then allow the whole earth to begin to resemble the Luminous Heights. We are therefore, through our abilities able to bring each soil or land to blossom in its own way and all the potentials and possibilities for these are there, we only need to tap them. Not only do we need to learn how to grow our foods efficiently and store them, we also need to know what Nature gives us in terms of natural fruits and herbs, which are cures for many ailments. We have not even scratched the surface of this, yet this is so indispensable that we can hardly make progress at all in the earthly sense if we do not master this. Our physical bodies and as such the proper unfolding of our spirits depend entirely on this. The choice of foods alone can help in maintaining a kind of blood radiation suitable for the unfolding of the human spirits on earth. This is so important that everything depends on it. A proper knowledge and a proper combination of foods leads to a situation where we can unfold our talents. But this knowledge can only be gained through close collaboration with the beings responsible for all these. They are the ones who have fashioned our physical bodies and are the ones who provide nourishment for it through their activities. They are therefore the ones who hold the key to this knowledge.
The great varieties of flowers on earth help awaken the sense of beauty which we brought with us from the Luminous Heights as a strong support and staff for our wanderings, preventing us from going astray. The treasures that are buried in the earth are to be used to decorate the Temple of God, which every race should have. There must always be a place where the pure worship of God is carried out and the treasures from the ground are to be used in the decoration of this Hall of Worship. Every land has its own peculiar resources underground; even some deserts are known to have diamonds. The most important thing for us is to gain connection with the elemental beings. Once this is done all the secrets connected with this particular element will then be shown to us even architectural styles can be learnt from them. Let us however examine the structure of the earth and observe the effect man has had.
The earth is made up of (1.) The Crust which is a layer that extends downwards to about 100 kilometres (2.) The Mantle and (3.) The Core. The crust consists of the outer surface of the earth with all the soil types, the floor of the oceans and so on. The mantle is divided in to two layers. It generally extends down to a depth of 2900 kilometres. It is mainly solid and contains minerals such as Iron, Magnesium and Silicon. The core however, has an outer shell of about 2225 kilometres in thickness; the inner core has a thickness of about 1275 kilometres. Both cores consist mainly of Iron with a small percentage of Nickel. The inner core is very hot however, approaching 6650º C. This heat is carried to the surface through a process of convection through the mantle. This flow can help to supply hot molten rock to the surface and help form the lava that erupts from volcanoes. The earth, on account of this core of iron is a gigantic magnet. The crust of the earth is where vegetation lies and on which we have the soil which is made from the weathering of rocks. Rocks however are generally divided into three (1.) Igneous, (2.) Metamorphic, (3.) Sedimentary. The soil, for all practical purposes is formed through a combination of the weathering of these rocks, the decay of organic material and soluble constituents such as nitrates and so on, water and gases. There are also organisms within it, which help in its turnover such as earthworms and mites. It also has a large amount of bacteria, which help in the formation of the nitrates, which are needed by the plants. In the crust of the earth, there are minerals, precious stones and so on the real uses of which are only to be shown to us through the association with the elemental beings and in ancient lore it has been said that the gnomes are those who guard the treasures of the earth underground.
The plants, in their usefulness to mankind cannot be overemphasised. Their photosynthetic activity alone and the benefits we derive from this has already been considered. Their usefulness as herbal remedies for the treatment of all sorts of diseases is still something that needs to be fully explored. Plants serve as foods as primary producers in many food chains. It would not be possible to exhaust in this small section all the usefulness of plants to life on earth. top
The element of water would include the rivers, brooks, streams, lakes and oceans. Numerous great and small elemental beings have been described associated with this element. The smaller ones being associated with brooks and streams and the progressively greater ones with lakes, rivers and the oceans. In Greek Mythology, there are many described as nymphs, especially the small ones of the rivers, brooks and streams. Nymphs have also been described as lesser 'goddesses' of the ocean. They generally have been described as being beautiful female beings fond of music and dancing. Thus we have the Naiads, which are nymphs of springs and freshwater streams; the Nereids, nymphs of the sea; the Oceanids, nymph daughters of the 'sea-god' Oceanus. In world Mythology in general, the animistic beings related to water have been called Mermaids who are wonderfully delicate beings with the upper body of a female and the lower torso of a fish; male forms have also been described called Mermen but these are less well known. The various beings associated with the water are generally called Nixies and are to be found in abundance in any natural body of water and their occupation is the maintenance of this element. Real knowledge therefore, about the secrets of water and its real use can only be gained from those whose work it is to maintain this element. It is only when we humbly acknowledge the existence of these beings will it be possible for us to tap from the vast knowledge which is theirs. A lot can be gained from this concerning flooding, irrigation and many other ways in which water can be exploited, which today we have no notion of whatever. top
Fire as an element has been recognised and worshipped since ancient times by various peoples. The elemental beings behind fire are called Salamanders and have been known to many ancient peoples. Both the smaller and greater ones are recognised. There have been accounts by various peoples of how fire was brought to mankind by the 'gods'. The Greeks believed that the hero Prometheus brought fire to mankind by stealing it from "Mount Olympus" the abode of the great 'gods'. Salamanders have been known to teach human beings how to make fire and maintain it. The respective 'gods' of fire are Hephaestus for the Greeks and Vulcan for the Romans. Fire worship is in many ways confused with sun worship. We find sun worship particularly with the Egyptians, who have a 'sun god' called 'Ra' and the Persians who called their own 'sun god' 'Mithra'. The importance of fire cannot be overemphasised and early man must have used it for warmth, cooking and to scare away wild animals. From the accounts in the book 'Ephesus', published by the Grail Message foundation, fire was used as a spiritual symbol thereby making the women at that time the first "Guardians of the Holy Flame of the Longing for the Light." It was used to achieve important victories for the Light in the story of the 'Light-Aesirs' people of Scandinavia. In the story of this people fire helped in the formation of the language. Fire has also been used in metalworking and the real secrets of this element are yet to be discovered. This can only be done from a close interaction with the elemental beings connected with this element.
